PEST PREVENTION FIELD GUIDE

Fruit flies in the kitchen: remove the breeding source

Small flies around fruit and food waste can multiply quickly. Not every tiny kitchen fly is a fruit fly—drain flies and fungus gnats require different source checks.

Clues to look for

Check for flies around overripe produce, compost, recycling containers, beverage residue, and damp organic debris. Observe their location before identifying the species.

Practical first steps

  1. Refrigerate ripe produce when practical, remove spoiled items, and empty compost regularly.
  2. Rinse recycling, scrub bins, and clean spills under appliances or around food storage.
  3. Clean the sink strainer and drain opening safely, then monitor whether fly numbers decline over several days.

What to avoid

Do not mix bleach and other cleaners or pour improvised pesticide solutions into drains. A trap may catch adults but will not fix an overlooked breeding source.

When to contact a professional

If activity persists after cleanup, ask a qualified professional to distinguish fruit flies from drain flies and inspect concealed organic buildup or moisture problems.

Public-health and pesticide safety resources

Consult Health Canada's pest-control tips and your local public-health authority. If using a pesticide in Canada, confirm that it is registered with a Pest Control Products (PCP) registration number for the intended pest and location, and follow its full label directions.
