PEST PREVENTION FIELD GUIDE
Bed bugs: identify clues and avoid spreading them
Bites alone cannot reliably identify bed bugs. Look for live insects, shed skins and dark spotting around mattress seams and bed-frame joints.
What to do first
- Inspect mattress seams and furniture joints carefully without transporting suspect items.
- Keep potentially affected washable items contained while moving them to laundry; use high heat only when fabric care instructions permit.
- Contact a licensed pest professional to confirm the problem and coordinate treatment.
What to avoid
Do not use bug bombs, rubbing alcohol or unregistered products. Moving unbagged belongings between rooms can spread an infestation.
When to get expert help
Contact a professional promptly if evidence points to bed bugs, especially in multi-unit housing.
Further guidance
Read Health Canada's pest-control tips and check local public-health recommendations. If a pesticide is considered in Canada, choose a product with a PCP registration number authorized for the pest and application site and follow its label precisely.
